How to use Deep Freeze

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Deep Freeze is a software security program that protects your sites' computers by controlling when changes can be made to computers.

This PDF documentation was created thanks to the volunteer services of Andrew Dacey.  It will help your CAP site in understanding "What is Deep Freeze" and how to use it.

Although Deep Freeze is still in use on older systems in some C@P Sites, the Halifax Regional C@P Association no longer offers Deep Freeze Technical Support or license renewals.

Corporate Profile

The Halifax Regional CAP Association is an established not-for-profit organization with extensive experience managing complex projects. These projects employ professionally trained staff to deliver quality service to communities through their locally operated Community Access Program (CAP) sites.

Since 2000 HRCAP has provided support to Community Access Programming (C@P) sites. C@P is a government of Canada initiative to provide Internet access to those who would not normally have it due to economic, social or geographic barriers. Currently 40 C@P sites in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) provide urban and rural communities affordable access to computers and the internet. Many C@P sites offer computer training including MS Office, Internet safety, Global Positioning Systems, video podcasting, and web page development. HRCAP provides over 15 full time jobs and injects over $1.7 million in the local economy, annually. HRCAP also provides employment assistance services such as Job Search Services (JSS) with sites located in Cole Harbour, Fisherman’s Cove & Sheet Harbour. Recently, the Halifax Regional C@P Association sponsored the Transition Center for former employees of Hershey/Moirs. In addition, via Industry Canada’s CAP Youth Initiative, HRCAP runs seasonal intern programs to help youth prepare for the workforce, which can provide internships for up to 25 students. C@P sites serve the general public with some sites having special services or access for specific groups, i.e. seniors, the homeless, youth at risk, and people who have low literacy and learning disabilities. HRCAP ran a highly successful adult literacy project, Bridging the Gaps – Assistive Technology, Low Literacy & Learning Disabilities, funded by HRSDC. As a long standing, well respected, non-profit organization with expertise in technology, employment services, and literacy, HRCAP is uniquely positioned to help Canadians improve literacy and essential skills in order to enter the workplace, maintain jobs, advance in the workplace and bridge the digital divide.

Job Search Services (JSS) has been a project of the HRCAP since 2001. The project offers job search support, needs assessment/case management services, workshops, and employment counselling at three Job Search Centres. Recently, JSS opened a Transition Centre for former Hershey/Moirs employees who were displaced when the plant closed. The Centre offers basic and intermediate computer classes, math and writing refreshers, and other GED prep assistance. JSS has specialized in working with clients facing multiple barriers and offers assistance to persons with limited literacy skills, and low level or no computer literacy skills. JSS has built strong relationships with many organizations and agencies in the communities served. JSS was previously a partner in HRCAP’s OLES funded adult literacy project, Bridging the Gaps.

What is CAP?

What is CAP?

The Community Access Program (CAP) is an initiative developed to help provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills to use it effectively. It is one of the first Canada On-line programs to be launched. And it's an important part of Connecting Canadians, the Government of Canada's exciting agenda, to make Canadians the most Internet-connected people in the world. Under CAP, public sites such as libraries and community centres act as "on-ramps" to the Information Highway and provide support on how to make the best use of the Internet.

Each access point is staffed with skilled and knowledgeable personnel who are there to help make your Internet experience simple and enjoyable. They'll answer your questions and guide you every step of the way. Together, you can develop the skills you need to "surf the Net."

Who's involved?

CAP has been designed by Industry Canada to establish up to 10,000 public Internet access sites in rural, remote and urban communities by March 31, 2001. Affordable access to the Information Highway means new opportunities, skills and knowledge for all Canadians, regardless of location.Together with provincial and territorial governments, community groups, social agencies, libraries, schools, volunteer groups, and the business community, CAP is helping Canadians take advantage of emerging opportunities in the new global knowledge-based economy.

How does it work?

"Access" means access to the Internet through computers. The Government of Canada continues to build a national network of computers placed in convenient public areas such as libraries and community centres in order to provide every Canadian with affordable access.

Connecting to the World

Internet access means you can:

  • Access federal, provincial and municipal information services
  • Seek out domestic and international business opportunities
  • Develop value-added products and services
  • Create local enterprises, jobs, growth and social development
  • Learn valuable skills to reap the opportunities provided by the knowledge-based economy

Visit the Industry Canada national website to find a local Internet access point near you.

How Nova Scotia Communities Use Geolocation To Increase Their Online Footprint

Thumbnail image for DSCF3901.JPG

The original presentation entitled 'Innovative Uses of GPS Technology in Public Access' is a session that was be presented in Vancouver BC on Feb 23rd to the assembly of the 2008 ICT Summit. Throughout that year, this presentation has continued to be improved and it has been translated into French.  Since then, it has found audiences at the Nova Scotia C@P Youth Initiative Training in Truro, the Annual General Meeting of the Reseau Acadien des sites P@C de la Nouvelle-Ecosse, and Halifax's first Podcamp in January 2009. More recently, a revised version of the presentation was given at MobileTech4SocialChangeHFX, a barcamp organized by Dale Zak.

HRCAP History

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

The first CAP sites were established in HRM in 1995. Some of the very first were Sheet Harbour, Tangier, Jeddore, and Middle Musquodoboit. The first sites saw value in working together co-operatively – providing strength in numbers – and so formed the Halifax Regional CAP Association in 2000. As a result of the way the Association was formed, it has always been community driven. Each individual site determines how best to provide access to IT, in a way that best suits the needs of that particular community – making each site unique. In essence, each CAP site works because the community makes it work.

HRCA'S mission statement is: “HRC@P unifies a network of CAP sites and plays a leadership role in strengthening the capacity of its members through advocacy and collaboration.”

The Association has a strong history in offering employment support services, as it has been sponsoring the Job Search Services project since September 2001. For nearly eight years, Job Search Services has been providing the communities of HRM Dartmouth to Moser River with employment orientation programming in participating member CAP sites. Job Search Services (JSS) has established a program that provides accessible services and programming to the community.

Resources for CAP Sites that are interested in learning more about how technology can help those with disabilities to access computers and the Internet. There are hardware and software examples as well as links to help you learn about assistive technology.

The Canadian Universal Access Initiative

All CAP Sites in HRM should have received a CD produced by the Neil Squire Foundation. This CD contains many excellent resources that can help you make your CAP Site accessible.

Downloads - this web page contains some of the resources available on the CD, including a survey you can perform to check your site's accessibility.

Examples of Assistive Technology Products

  • Trackballs have the ball on top instead of underneath for those who struggle with moving the mouse accurately on a desk. Logitech may be willing to donate some to your site; contact the Canadian office for details.
  • List of other alternatives to the traditional mouse. For more options, search at Google for 'alternative, mouse'.
  • Download a collection of non-traditional mouse pointers that you can use to help people with low vision better see the mouse pointers on the screen. Once you've downloaded the program, double-click it, then read the README file it creates for more instructions on how to install.
  • Screen Magnifier programs assist those who have a visual impairment by 'blowing up' parts of the screen to show larger text/images.
  • Screen Reader software is designed to help those with a severe visual impairment, and also those with low literacy.
  • Reading software is a little different, as it is designed to help people with visual impairments to read printed material that is input into the computer with
